Syrian foreign minister, Walid Muallem, called on Syrian refugees to return home. This comes ahead of
which includes Syria as one of the 7 countries restricted. The foreign minister, however, did not mention or directly comment this
. According to the SANA news agency, Walid Muallem “renewed the invitation of the government to Syrian refugees living in neighboring countries to return to their country.” He stressed:
The country was ready to receive them and grant them a dignified life
Trump’s call for the creation of safe zones in Syria has been supported by Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as for most of the Lebanese politicians and people. The creation of safe zones would be the first step for the return of Syrians to their country. Lebanon currently hosts, according to the UNHCR, 1.5 million Syrian refugees. Making roughly 1 in every 5 people in Lebanon a refugee. Actual estimates put the number closer to 2 million. This excludes the estimated 600,000 Palestinian refugees and 100,000 Iraqi refugees. Syrians have also constantly confirmed the notion that they will return home when/if it becomes safe again. The creation of safe ones, with the support of the US, Turkey and Saudi Arabia would be welcomed by the Lebanese people.
